Articulation Station!

Articulation Station!

I’m so EXCITED to tell all of you about the project I’ve been working on over the past year. It is a fun, engaging and interactive articulation app for the iPad called “Articulation Station”. The screenshot above is showing the home screen on the app.

Articulation Station not only has flashcards that target specific sounds, it is a full featured articulation program that also targets specific sounds in words, sentences and stories!

Let me share a few details on what this app will offer in the way of articulation therapy. With Articulation Station you can start your child working with target words for specific sounds that they need help with, and eventually take them all the way through to using those same target words in super fun (and funny) sentences as well as stories.

Each sound position has a consistent number of target words (20) which can be worked on in 6 different activities throughout the entire application. Every single target word and image in Articulation Station has been carefully selected with children in mind, but I have realized that going through all the images and content keeps my attention as well and I love it. So, yes, adults will certainly be engaged when working with this app too! The images are real life images that look amazing on the iPad. It is so pretty, but even more important it is very functional and easy to use! I will be sharing more screenshots the closer we get to completing it so you can have more of a visual explanation of how Articulation Station will work.

I had some lofty expectations when I initially sat down to start putting this app together and I feel like they have been met. I really wanted to create something that would not only be useful but easy to use, something for parents, teachers and Speech Language Pathologists alike. I also wanted it to be fun and engaging for the kids so that they would enjoy working on their articulation. I wanted to provide a full articulation program that has everything you would need to teach every sound and to also create a thorough way to track data and scores that would be easy to navigate and clear to understand. I also wanted this information to be easily shared between the SLP’s, teachers, and parents working with their children. Articulation Station has all of this!

We are currently in the programming phase and Articulation Station should be released this fall under my company name Little Bee Speech. I’m very excited to be adding Articulation Station to the exciting world of speech and special education apps. I really feel that these devices (iPhone, iPad, & the many Android devices) are making a huge difference in therapy and how we work with our kids. Of course these mobile devices could never replace a parent, therapist or teacher, but what awesome tools they are for us to help these kids we love!

  2. Good luck with that it looks adorable and AMAZING! I can’t wait to learn more about it.

  3. This is great!! If you end up making an Android-based one, maybe look into getting it on the Barnes & Noble app store for the Nook Color. I would totally buy it for my daughter! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Monika,

I will definitely be looking into getting this on Android, once the hurdles of getting it on iPad and iPhone are completed. Thanks for your comment!

  5. We are shooting for a mid fall release… keeping the finger crossed!

  6. Great! Good luck with this, and thanks for all you do!

  7. sounds very interesting. We would also be interested in this app. Please keep me informed ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Hi Heidi! I’m Wilnelia MSP in Puerto Rico. i’m so glad to discover your page it is very inspirational for me, because i have a daughter Camila (1.8 months) and i stay in home with her, but i want to do something for help childrens and moms related at my profession. I know that God has the control in my life and i stay in His plans.
i hope that you believe that God has beautiful plans for you and your family.
    God blessed you,

  9. I am soooooo very excited for you! I can’t wait to tell everyone about this new app! I would also be interested in using this tool! You are amazing! Great job!! Best wishes to you and I hope to hear more about your new and creative ideas!

  10. Maybe I could use this with my school caseload? I think they would love it.

  11. Yes, Definitely! It will be a wonderful tool for school based SLP’s.

  12. Heidi, Which version of the I-Pad will we need and how much will this app be? It sounds great!

  13. Hi Lisa,

Articulation Station will work on both iPad and iPad 2. We are still working on the pricing for now, but will definitely announce it once we’ve got it ready. Thanks for your interest!

  14. Hello –

My 7-yr old daughter is in speech therapy for her r sounds – it’s a tricky one! – so I’m coming from the parent side. Will this app be able to record her saying the target words, etc? It’s very helpful during her practice out of sessions because we can share them with her therapist to evaluate. It also helps her hear and evaluate her own pronunciation and progress.

Thanks for the info – it sounds and looks like a great app!

  15. Alexa,

The initial release of Articulation Station will have the ability to record and playback target words practiced by the child while in a specific activity. Only one sound will be saved, until another sound is recorded and replaces the previous sound. It can be played back at anytime during the activity. However I am looking into the possibility of saving multiple sounds as a progress sound “library” on future versions of the app that can be accessed at anytime. Currently in therapy, I use an audio recording app (there are many of these) to record the child practicing the sound which can then be played back for the child to hear. I believe it also keeps a library of recorded sounds to access at a later date. Hope this helps. Thanks for your interest!

  16. So glad to hear about this!! We currently use the worksheets on your website and would love to be able to use the new app but we have an iPod Touch. Will the app work for this? (ie. Will it be a universal app?)

    Thanks so much!

  17. Congratulations on getting your app this far, it must have really taken some work to design. This latest wave of technology really seems to have the power to change the way we work with kids. The potential for using apps for AAC is the most exiting I think, giving easy and affordable access to devices as well as making them more socially acceptable as everyone has a laptop / ipad / smartphone.

  18. Jenn,

Thank you for your interest! The app will be released first on the ipad and then we will work as hard and quickly as we can to get it released on the iphone and ipod touch.

  19. Thanks, Heidi! Recording one version and being able to keep it will work well for us now – but I agree that being able to keep it and access it later (as in hearing progress) would be fantastic. It’s the equivalent to the math apps where my daughter do a timed test and later I can see their time improvement and which cards they missed – can always go back and compare.

For now, however, what you’re set to launch will work. I like her to record them and she can re-record until she thinks that she’s saved the “best” articulation of the word. Then, shell play it for me or her speech therapist and they can discuss it. In addition to hearing it back, that self-evaluation is really valuable.

I can’t wait – hope it launches soon! All the best!

  20. Oh, one other thing to add – As I said, my daughter is working on “r” and it’s a very difficult one. One thing I’m finding shocking is how few resources there are that are books or dedicated story level activities. We can’t read “My ‘r’ sound box” anymore!

I would be happy to pay an in-app upgrade for a “set” of r story-level resources if you developed them. Just an idea for more revenue down the road.

  21. Heidi,

I’ve been following along with your blog for some time now and it has been so helpful with some speech issues with my three year. Especially since we currently live on a tiny island in the Caribbean and we don’t have access to a speech pathologist. We’ve been working on her sounds and I’m seeing progress and just wanted to say thanks for your help! This app sounds perfect for us and I can’t wait to download it! ๐Ÿ™‚ Would love to spread the word about this great resource on my blog if you’re interested. ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. Rebecca,

I’m so glad to hear about your progress! That makes me happy! Just checked out your blog, it’s adorable! I love everything crafty, just wish I had more time to do it. I’d love to have you share Articulation Station on your blog. Thanks for your interest!

  24. Thanks Alexa!

I think you will be pleased to see how much content will be in the R program on Articulation Station!

  25. I have nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award! I have nominated you because of your great ideas and fun tips for speech therapy. I am in school to become an SLP and am excited about resources like your blog that are available! I also believe that in the home is where the best speech therapy can occur.

  26. This is amazing!!!!! Thank you so much! Your whole website is amazing. I just downloaded the app and am going to start working with my son tomorrow (I also forwarded the link to his speech teacher). Thanks again!

  27. Love the app! The pictures are wonderful. Would you consider adding s blends?

  28. Thanks Kimberly! Within the /s/ sound program there are s-blends along with the initial, medial, and final positions of the s sound. I hope this helps!

  29. Love the app. Wish you would give us a price break for a bundle of a 4 or 5 letters ๐Ÿ™‚ (I do realize this app is much less than I pay our private SP) My daughter looks forward to practicing her speech with this app!!! Thanks for the great product!!!!!

  30. Any chance of this app being available for the Blackberry Playbook?

  31. I don’t have current plans for the Blackberry Playbook. Once it’s ready for iPhone and iPod Touch I will however be looking into other platforms as well. Thanks for your interest!

  32. Joyce, Thank you, I’m so glad you like the app! To let you know, we will be having a sale on the individual sound programs within Articulation Station coming up within the next couple of weeks. I will be announcing the details via email and on the Facebook page of Little Bee Speech when they are ready.

You can sign up for the email list on my company website ( and you will receive an email with detail on the sale, prices, times, etc. Thanks for your interest!

  33. I just have to tell you that I am OBSESSED with this app! I use it daily with my articulation students, as well as with some of the language kiddos. The paragraphs are great for them…and having level 1 and 2… Genius! Definitely worth the extra money over some other, less complete articulation apps. I tell everyone I know!
    Thank you!!

  34. Great site. Any chance this will be available on android market?? I know is purchase in heartbeat

  35. Hi Amanda,

Articulation Station is currently only available for the iPad on the iTunes store. We are working toward making it available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Once we get through those hurdles we’ll take a look at the android market. Thanks for your interest.

  36. Thanks Liz! It’s great to hear how much you are enjoying the app!

  37. I love this app! I stumbled across your page on pinterest, but I have been using your app in therapy this semester! Kudos to you for making such an awesome app that you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for up front! I love that you can purchase the sounds that you need as you go!

  38. Thanks Hannah! I’m happy to hear you’re enjoying the app!

  39. Thank you VERY much for creating this app! I bought it when it went on sale over Valentine’s day and there hasn’t been a day I haven’t used it! My students love it and specifically ask to play the ‘ipad game’ when they come to therapy. You’re the best!

  40. So glad to see someone fill this void. What is your target date on releasing the ipod version?

  41. The iPhone/iPod Touch version of Articulation Station is currently in the design phase. I don’t have a completion date at this time but once I do, I’ll be sure and announce it on the Little Bee Speech Facebook page. Thanks for your interest!

  42. Hi there Heidi!

Our entire department is enjoying the use of Articulation Station. I have a young patient here and she would like to know if you have a release date for your iPod/iPhone app. She is sooooo ready to use it on her iPod!!

  43. Dear Heidi,
An SLP friend uses Articulation Station on her iPad and loves it. I am considering buying a Nook tablet but don’t really know much about apps. Is it possible to get Articulation Station on the Nook tablet?
    Deb Kabat, SLP

  44. Hi Deb, At the moment Articulation Station is only available on the iPad. Once it is on the iPhone and iPod touch I will look into bringing it to other platforms. Thanks for your interest!

  45. I would love to buy this for Kindle Fire if you were to make it available on the Amazon appstore.

  46. Hi Tanya,

Thank you for your kind comments. I wish we had a release date for the iPhone, iPod version. All I can say is we are working on it. Tell her we are hoping to release it this fall.

    All the best,

  47. I just found your site through a friend. I have articulation and I love it. I can’t tell you how wonderful it is. My son has a moderate-severe phonological disorder and we use this as part of his speech therapy program. He is also allowed free time on the iPad and during this time he chooses to play articulation and loves the sentences and the stories. Your program is so self motivating and brilliant that I recommend it to all my friends and think that while it is the most expensive app I have purchased it is also the most used and the best one I have seen for speech therapy help.
Keep up the good work and I look forward to the improvements that you make.

  48. Thank you Ruth! It is always good to hear that Articulation Station is making a difference. I especially love that your son chooses to play it during his free time. The more practice the better right! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    All the best!

  49. My students and I love this app! It is wonderful to have everyone’s sound cards at your finger tips. I would love to see more r vowels.

  50. Thank you for the suggestion Debbie! With our most recent update you can add your own images to the app if you have Articulation Station Pro or have purchased all the sounds in Articulation Station which will allow you to add all the vocalic r’s you’d like. I hope this will make the app even more useful for you!

    All the best,

  51. It is really very interesting to know about the articulation station and it is fun to use this app.
